Common Amenities / Forward Reach and Side Reach Requirements

Forward Reach and Side Reach Requirements

ADA regulations establish specific reach limitations for wheelchair users to ensure that controls, dispensers, and other operable elements are accessible. These requirements apply to various building elements including water fountains, telephones, and other common amenities.

Forward Reach

Forward reach specifications define how far and how high a wheelchair user can reach when approaching an element from the front.

High Forward Reach Limit

Specification Requirement
Forward reach height 48" min.
Toe clearance depth 15" max.
Clear floor space depth 48"
Clear approach width 30" min.

Maximum Forward Reach Over an Obstruction

When reaching over an obstruction (such as a counter), the following dimensional relationships apply:

Condition Height Requirement (Y)
When X is less than 20 inches Y shall be 48 inches maximum
When X is 20 to 25 inches Y shall be 44 inches maximum

Additional Requirements:

  • X shall be less than or equal to 25 inches
  • Z shall be greater than or equal to X
  • Clear floor space: 48" min.

These specifications ensure wheelchair users can reach controls or objects placed on or above obstructions while maintaining proper body positioning.

Side Reach

Side reach specifications apply when a wheelchair user approaches an element from the side, parallel to the surface.

Clear Floor Space Parallel Approach

Specification Requirement
Reach depth 10" max.
Clear width 30"
Clear length 48"

High and Low Side Reach Limits

Specification Requirement
Reach depth over obstruction 10" max.
High side reach 54" max.
Clear approach width 30" min.
Low reach height 9" min. to 15" max.

Maximum Side Reach Over Obstruction

When reaching over an obstruction from a side approach:

Specification Requirement
Clear width 30" min.
Obstruction depth 24" max.
Reach height over obstruction 34" max.
High side reach 48" max.

Note: These diagrams and specifications illustrate the specific requirements of these regulations and are intended only as an aid for building design and construction.

These reach requirements are applied throughout the facility to ensure accessibility of controls, dispensers, and operable parts. For specific applications of these requirements, see Water Fountains and Public Telephones.
