Water Fountains and Public Telephones

When water fountains or public telephones are provided, they must comply with ADA accessibility regulations to ensure access for individuals with disabilities.

Water Fountains (Drinking)

Water fountains must be installed with proper clearances and height specifications to accommodate wheelchair users. Two primary installation configurations are permitted:

Alcove Installation

Specification Requirement
Clearance to spout 18" min.
Spout projection 6" max.
Knee clearance height 27" min.
Fountain height 36" max.
Clear approach space 32" min.

Nonalcove Wing Wall Installation

Specification Requirement
Clearance to spout 18" min.
Spout projection 6" max.
Knee clearance height 27" min.
Fountain height 36" max. (39" max. on some models)
Clear approach space 32" min.

Both installations require adequate clear floor space to allow wheelchair accessibility and proper approach angles.

Public Telephones

Public telephones must comply with accessibility regulations through one of three approved configurations, each designed to accommodate different reach and approach requirements.

Side Reach Arrangement

Elevation Requirements:

Specification Requirement
Mounting height (highest operable part) 54" max.
Clear knee space 27" min.
Post base Optional

Plan Requirements:

Specification Requirement
Clear area 30" x 48" minimum
Overhang permitted 19" max.

Full Height Enclosure

Elevation Requirements:

Mounting height (highest operable part) 54" max.
Clear knee space 27" min.

Plan Requirements:

Specification Requirement
Clear area 30" x 48" minimum
Enclosure width 30"

Forward Reach Arrangement

Elevation Requirements:

Specification Requirement
Mounting height (highest operable part) 48" max. (if Y is less than 20")
Post base Optional

Special Conditions:

  • If Y is less than 20 inches, then X shall be greater than 27 inches

Plan Requirements:

Specification Requirement
Clear area 30" x 48" minimum

Special Conditions:

  • If Z is greater than 12 inches, then Y shall be greater than 30 inches
