Toilet Room Signage and Room Identification

At Toilet Facilities

Doorways leading to toilet facilities shall have geometric signs centered on the door at a height of 60" above floor and their color and contrast shall be distinctly different from the color and contrast of the door. An additional sign pictogram shall be installed on the wall adjacent to the latch outside of the door at 60" above floor with raised letters & braille.

Door Signs (Geometric)

Symbols in contrasting colors to doors, mounted at 60" above floor:

Room Type Symbol
WOMEN 12" diameter circle symbol
MEN 12" equilateral triangle symbol
UNISEX 12" ÷ 4" combined symbol

Wall Signs (Pictogram)

Various pictogram signs are used for toilet room identification:

  • MEN (with accessibility symbol)
  • WOMEN (with accessibility symbol)
  • UNISEX (with accessibility symbols for men and women)
  • RESTROOMS (accessibility symbol only)
  • MEN with text "HANDICAPPED RESTROOM ON FIRST FLOOR"
  • MEN (with accessibility symbol, alternate design)

Toilet Room Signage Installation

MOUNTING REQUIREMENTS:

- Geometric symbol (triangle for MEN shown) mounted centered on door
- 60" height from floor to center of symbol
- Wall-mounted pictogram adjacent to door latch

At Room Identification

Examples: name of room, room numbers, exits.

Requirements: Raised Letters & Braille

Character Specifications:

  • 5/8" to 2" high, raised 1/32"
  • Sans serif, upper case
  • Non-glare
  • Contrast: Light-on-dark or dark-on-light

Braille Specifications:

  • Grade II
  • Dots = 1/10" on center in each cell
  • 2/10" space between cells
  • Raised 1/40"

Obstacles

A person must be able to approach within 3" of signage without encountering protruding objects or standing (sitting) within swing of door.

Pictograms

Location: Where used in permanently signed rooms & spaces, equivalent verbal description placed below in raised letters & Grade II Braille.

Border Dimension: Min. 6" high.
